Maths

At Priory Rise, we aim to foster enjoyment and success in mathematics through a stimulating curriculum that meets the needs of all of our children.  Lessons are taught in a carefully sequenced order, building upon prior learning in logical steps to allow children to solve problems with confidence.

We believe that children need to be given the opportunity to discuss and explore mathematical concepts, and so we devote large amounts to time to paired and group discussion.  Through these discussions, the children learn to explain their thinking and reasoning to embed learning securely.  Teachers provide clear modelling to children using equipment and representations - particularly bar models - throughout all years of the school.

We also believe that fluency in key facts and mathematical procedures is of vital importance, and as such we devote time within lessons to exploring and practising these.  In addition, children also practise key facts during smaller additional sessions throughout the week, which provide the opportunity for revisiting prior learning and keeping it fresh.

Differentiated learning activities provide challenge and support for our children.  Children benefit from additional support which is given within the classroom and, on occasion, in interventions with the aim of ensuring that when children leave Priory Rise School they are ready and confident for the next stage in their education.
