Year 1

Welcome to Year One!

In Year One we plan a rich and varied curriculum that allows all children to gain key skills and knowledge, whilst exploring a range of topics. During Year One, we build upon children’s existing learning experiences and we work incredibly hard to help all children become independent learners. This includes them taking responsibility and looking after their own belongings.

Curriculum Overview

In Year One, we follow the National Curriculum. Our learning is organised into half termly themes which reflect our children’s interests. Wherever possible, each curriculum subject is linked to the current theme, including Science, Design and Technology, History, Geography, Music and Art. During our RE teaching we work hard to ensure that all world religions are covered. We plan themed immersion afternoons where the children participate in a range of practical activities which support our learning. All children have two weekly PE sessions with our designated sports coaches.

The National Curriculum for Key Stages One and Two can be found below, along with details of the curriculum for each term.
We have also put together some additional information about the maths curriculum and our approach to teaching written methods of calculation.
The following documents detail our assessment bands used for Reading and Writing.
Also detailed below is information about VIPERS, a range of reading prompts aimed to help develop children’s comprehension skills.  We refer to these during our guided reading sessions.  You may want to use these questions when you read with your child at home.
Homework

In Year One, children should continue to have regular support with their reading at home. Ideally, it is best that your child reads daily for up to 20 minutes. As well as reading their school book, your child will also benefit from reading a range of other age appropriate stories/information texts. Your child will also receive a spelling journal where they will be able to practise spelling the Year One common exception words. Spelling journals should be given to your child’s class teacher every Friday.
