(SOLD OUT) Sale of used laptops

14th November 2019
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE HAVE NOW SOLD OUT OF THESE LAPTOPS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST.

We have a number of used school laptops for sale, priced at £50 each.

These are Dell Latitude E5500 laptops. Specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo, P8400 @ 2.26 Ghz
RAM: 2 GB
HDD: 160 GB
Optical Drive: DVD ROM

These are laptops formerly used by students and as such they will have some marks or stickers. The hard drives will be wiped prior to installing the new operating system and software, so will contain no files relating to the school or any staff/children.

The following images give you a good idea of the general condition of these laptops.

All laptops are supplied with a working charger and are sold as seen. The above images are indicative only, some laptops may have more or less marks, stickers, etc. Bear in mind that due to the age of the laptops battery life cannot be guaranteed. Some laptops will work for a short while on battery, while others will need the charger to remain plugged in to operate.

These laptops come with the Raspberry Pi Desktop Linux operating system installed and a suite of software that includes word processor, spreadsheets, presentation software, web browser, video and audio players and a range of software to support learning to program in various languages, e.g. Scratch, Python, Java, etc.

If you wish to purchase one of these laptops, please email your request to office@prioryrise.milton-keynes.sch.uk and we will contact you when your laptop is ready to collect.

In anticipation of some questions, we have put together the following “Can I...?” questions and answers:

Watch DVDs? These laptops all have DVD drives so they are able to watch DVDs using the included VLC software.

Connect to my WiFi? All the laptops come with working WiFi built in, as well as an Ethernet port for wired network connections.

Play Minecraft? Assuming you own the Java version of the game (by purchasing it from the Mojang website) then you can install it and play it on these laptops.

Watch YouTube, Netflix, iPlayer, etc.? Yes, YouTube and other video streaming sites should all work as expected.

Play games? Some games will certainly work, but you will need to take into account the specifications of these computers. If you already play games on another computer and use Steam, you can download and install Steam and compatible games on these computers. It should be noted that Fortnite is not currently available for the Linux operating system so cannot be played on these laptops.

Be safe from viruses? Linux is a far more secure operating system than Windows and generally speaking you do not need to use any form of anti-virus software.

Replace Linux with Windows? If you purchase a licence key from somewhere and download the software you should be able to install it without issue. Bear in mind that these are older laptops so performance under the latest version of Windows may not be optimal. The installed Linux operating system was selected primarily because of how well it works on older devices.
