At Priory Rise we place huge importance on providing our children with the knowledge and skills they will need to be successful not only in the next stage of their learning journey but as they become young adults in the world in which they live. We want children to develop a positive self image, feeling free to be unique - an individual - and develop the confidence to challenge negativity, inequality, and prejudice. We want our young people to know how to keep themselves healthy and safe, now and in the future. Our Personal, Social and Health education (PSHE) provides children with lots of opportunities and experiences to manage emotions, and develop communication skills and strategies, in order to live in a culturally diverse world, celebrate differences and maintain positive relationships.
We use Jigsaw as a basis for teaching and learning which will equip children with essential life skills. This important work starts in the Nursery with weekly activities/lessons building on knowledge and fine-tuning skills in children as they move through the school to Year 6. Six themes, lasting a half term, are followed each year, these are:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Changing Me
Our monthly values link very closely to these lessons/activities, as children learn to apply these to their behaviours in their everyday lives.
In addition, we teach our children Restorative Practices, where they learn to make meaningful connections with others, learning to behave positively, even when this is challenging; as this is what we believe makes the difference for a positive world. Adults model to children, in every interaction, how what they have to say and their feelings are valued, so children learn how to talk through difficult situations to find resolution. Children come to understand there may be more than one way to successfully problem solve, learning to develop empathy and understanding for others.
